Really cool band I'm playing tomorrow on Global Grooves

I am playing this band tomorrow, a track from Flower Travellin Band from Japan.

"A Japanese band that originated in the late sixties whose first album titled 'Challenge' was released in '68, covering songs by Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Jefferson Airplane and included one original song. The album art-work caused a stir in the Japanese media as it depicted each member posing naked. This track is from their second album, titled Satori but the first of their Original Material, record in '70, released in '71. Shortly after, the band relocated to Canada where they performed with artists such as Dr. John, and ELP. In '73, they were billed to perform with the Rolling Stones throughout their Japanese tour, however all concerts were canceled when Mick Jaggers visa was rejected due to a drug conviction. In the 80s, they collaborated with The Wailers. In 2007, the band members officially reunited and released an album in 2008. In March 2010, future tours and production were halted when Akira was diagnosed with lung cancer at age 63. Joe Yamanaka -- vocals, harmonica/Hideki Ishima -- guitar/Jun Kozuki -- bass guitar, guitar/Joji "George" Wada -- drums"-You Tube

Here is a link to the video, very psychedelic stuff...

New music played today

Today on Global Grooves, I played some music from a new release called "Music from Saharan Cell Phones". There are some really exceptional tracks on this album. It was compiled from basically field recordings taken in Mali in 2009-10. I expected to hear some music that sounded primitive and homemade but I was gladly mistaken. The music is rich and textured and has the feel of the grooves from the Tuareg regions of the Saharan Desert. The digital download is a killer price with detailed liner notes. The link to it is here:

http://www.worldmusic.net/news/news/2012-01-16/music-from-saharan-cellphones/

"Music from Saharan cellphones is a compilation of music collected from memory cards of cellular phones in the Saharan desert. The World Music Network have discovered this intriguing release, produced by Christopher Kirkley, courtesy of Sahelsounds.com

In much of West Africa, cellphones are used as all purpose multimedia devices. In lieu of personal computers and high speed internet, the knockoff cellphones house portable music collections, playback songs on tinny built in speakers, and swap files in a very literal peer to peer Bluetooth wireless transfer. "-World Music Network website.

I highly recommend this release! Enjoy, and if you haven't already, please follow my blog and tell your friends. I am constantly posting new stuff, links and images trying to make this blog a one stop location for world music news and info.
